Bakersfield Sound Tribute at Belly Up >> Aug 2

I'm hosting another Barroom Ball this week at Belly Up Tavern, Solana Beach CA

Join us for a tribute to the Bakersfield sound,
with songs by Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Wynn Stewart and more!

Also included will be original California country by Brawley and Gethen Jenkins.
Special appearance by Graham Nancarrow.

Gethen Jenkins (formerly The Freightshakers)
2015 Ameripolitan Music Award winner "Outlaw Group"

“This hard-driving, honky-tonk group lead by Gethen Jenkins is a perfect way to spend any night, wherever it may take you.” – National Country Review

With his powerful, gut wrenching, baritone sound, Gethen Jenkins is on a fast train to stardom. Gethen is an award winning singer and songwriter from Huntington, West Virginia. His songs are of considerable depth and meaning, driven by passion, and full of heart and spirit which are sure to run the gamut of human emotions.
“The relationship between the listeners and music is what I feed on” Gethen’s journey began surrounded by American music, from the purest of Bluegrass to whiskey soaked Honkytonk. Music took hold at the age of eight, beating on his dad’s Gibson guitar. His teenage years were spent in Galena, a rural indian village on the Yukon River, deep in the Alaskan tundra. After 8 years in the U.S. Marines, Gethen landed in Southern California. Returning from Iraq, determined to sing his own song, he found a home in Country Music with his five piece band The Freightshakers (since revamped as Gethen Jenkins). Over the next several years Gethen immersed himself in his music, working hard to create a unique sound keeping true to his roots.

March 16, Belly Up benefit for Candye Kane

I'm producing a special edition of Brawley's BarRoom Ball this month to support our friend Candye Cane. Join us to raise funds and make joyous music to help her through her continued battle with cancer.  Advanced tickets here: http://bellyup.com/brawleys-blues-ball-for-candye-kane-ft-james-harman

As of March 4 via Laura Chavez:
"Candye Update: The procedure took place on Wednesday and the doctors were successful in provoking and locating the bleed. Unfortunately, once it started it was very difficult to control and she suffered tremendous blood loss throughout the procedure and over the night. Things have stabilized more now and she is resting comfortably in the ICU. We knew this was a risk of the procedure but I don't think anyone expected the level of blood loss that occurred. As always, she proves she is the Toughest Girl Alive and the medical team here at Cedars worked and worked along with her and never gave up. They cannot stop commenting on just how strong and tough she is. But she still needs all of our prayers and energy and light in hopes she continues to stabilize and they are able ween her off of sedation and the breathing tube and most of all, that the bleeding stops for good.
Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers and continue to send white light and continue to visualize her back onstage, in all of her beads and feathers, where she belongs and belting out "I'm The Toughest Girl Alive" for all of us.

You can also help by donating directly to Paypal, at candyekanetour@aol.com or donating blood at your local blood bank.

Brawley's BarRoom Ball - May 20

Got plans for Wednesday night?  You do now!

Wed. May 20, 2015  ||  7pm doors • 8pm show
at

I'm hosting a great night of music featuring my band, Brawley
along with two Award-Winning Americana bands,

I am thrilled to finally be bringing you Brawley's BarRoom Ball! The BarRoom Ball is a series of concerts featuring 3 live bands, local or guests, in the genres of American music: Country, Western Swing, Outlaw Country, Alt Country, Americana, Roots Rock, or Rockabilly. With an open wide dance floor and a world-class sound system and staff, we are proud to present these shows at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA.  Original music only (no tribute bands or cover bands)

Here's a little more about the bands this month:
Sara Petite & The Sugar Daddies: Sara Petite is a gifted singer-songwriter who possesses the unique ability to reach the hearts and souls of fans young and old. She has the rare gift to craft songs that appeal equally, but are interpreted differently by fans of diverse perspectives. This comes through in her live performances as well. A true original, Sara's music does not conveniently fit into any one musical genre or sub-category, but rather traces her influences in country, bluegrass, rock and folk, and emerges into a sound completely her own. As welcome in senior citizen centers as she is in biker bars, nightclub venues and festivals, Sara is as American as apple pie and Harley Davidson. She is gritty, she is wild, she is tender with a soul of a child.

Freightshakers : Ameripolitan Award Winner 2015, Outlaw Country. So while everyone sits around moaning the blues about the "death of the LA Country scene"...these boys fly a big finger in the face of the 70's rock that is being passed off as country music on the radio. Led by Gethen Jenkins who arrived in Southern California via West Virginia and Alaska (somebody get that boy a damn map!!) these boys are keeping country alive regardless of FM radio. Throw on a worn-out truckers cap, pop open something cold and cheap, and get ready for a good time!

And for fun, a video from our BarRoom Ball in December

BarRoom Ball March 26

I'm hosting (with Brawley) a new series of shows at Belly Up Tavern...starting March 26.  Join us for Brawley's BarRoom Ball for the best in Americana, Country, Roots, and Western Swing... homegrown and bands and our friends that happen to be passing through town!

Thursday's show features:

<< Brawley at 8pm >>
Featuring Nena Anderson, Adrian Demain, David Berzansky, Dale Daniel and Jim Austin

<< Sam Outlaw at 9pm >>
Sam is the talk of the town...he has just recorded a record with Ry Cooder and has been featured as one of Rolling Stone Country's "one to watch."  His band also features San Diego's own Molly Jenson. Sam writes original songs that seek to capture the spirit of the classic country music he learned from his favorite singers: George Jones, Willie Nelson, Gene Watson, Don Williams, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam, etc.  This band is a new, original upcoming artist you won't want to miss.

<< Alex Woodard at 10pm >>
Alex is an incredible storyteller, crafting tales of love, loss and life and supported by a band that hints at influences of Springsteen and Petty, yet completely his own.  He has toured nationally behind five critically-acclaimed albums, earning prestigious industry nods and sharing the stage with some of today’s most popular acts. His book/album package "For The Sender" (Hay House) features his story of release and redemption woven through songs written about real-life letters. When he’s not surfing in his beach town north of San Diego, Alex lives with a big dog and bigger horse in the mountains of Idaho.

Honky-tonk Heaven

Nena Anderson & Jim Austin w/Brawley 4/21/12 at Griffin San Diego. photo by O

There are some things that just make me smile.

A few years ago my friend, bassist Jim Austin, put together a band.
The formula was...good friends and good music = a good time!

So Jim, drummer John Kuhlken, pedal steel player David Berzansky,
guitarist Adrian Demain and I all got together to play music dear to our hearts:
honky-tonk!  Party music, sweet shuffles and swingin' two-steps
by our favorite artists. Faron Young, George Jones, Buck Owens,
Charlie Rich, Don Gibson, Patsy Cline, etc. etc. etc. Within a few rehearsals
we had added original tunes by Adrian and myself as well,
and within a year, we had an award nominated country band, Brawley.
(Named after the California "cattle call" rodeo town just east of San Diego.)
Five friends laughing, playing, enjoying the music, audience and each other.
Every show is about that.

Last May, in an unforeseen tragedy, we lost our drummer John.
We lost not only a bandmate, but more importantly, a good friend.
Since then Brawley has played only a few shows. It's not difficult to find a drummer.
It is difficult to feel like you're replacing a friend...who can never be 'replaced.'

Last Saturday Brawley played our first show in many months.
Our friend Dale Daniel from Los Angeles joined us on drums.
While stumbling through a few tunes, the laughter and friendships
and unbelievable musicianship of the band made me feel sure John was with us
that night, having a beer and laughing with us from the heavens.
Brawley rocked the set just as we always have...

What a great night! Maybe a little too many whiskeys, but a few turns
on the dance floor to the music of Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons
and such a fun night of making music with friends...
well, it's honky-tonk heaven.

So Many Projects!

This month is a chaotic one...plenty of shows, the debut of The Neverout (with a new lineup and sound), the launch of my website MerchMover, and many other odds & ends coming together. So I've decided it's time for a spring clean. Time to get it all organized and (hopefully *sigh*) simplified! I'm looking forward to everything having it's place. This website will serve as the hub for all things Nena Anderson, with links to all of my other projects: Solo performances, Creative work, Photography, MerchMover, The Neverout, Brawley, Jazz, and my cooking blog Nena's Cocina. Whew! Time to get crackin'...
